Hey guys! I am currently writing this post from sunny, beautiful Mauritius Island! Finishing up grad school, looking for a job and being an adult in general left little time for me to travel the past little while. As I have previously written, Mauritius is a gorgeous island located in the middle of the Indian Ocean. The climate is warm and humid, so I had a bit of preparation to do skin-wise before arriving, seeing as though it was still quite cold in Toronto.
My journey took the following route, I took a plane from Toronto to France, had a bit of layover there and then continued with a 10 hour ride from France to Mauritius. This got me thinking more about my skin and how I was going to be taking care of it on this long haul.
I will be honest with you guys; I am not a great flyer. If I could skip taking an airplane all together I would. I get sick easily, don’t really eat and don’t leave my seat until we land. So my skin was an even bigger concern seeing as though I knew washing my face or having an easy access to a bathroom would be a problem.
Leaving from Toronto, I felt quite confident. I had a full face of makeup on, foundation, powder, the works. I always see people dressed to the nines when flying and although I am not that extreme, I didn’t want to look like I just woke up.
Looking back, I should have just moisturized my face well and brought a face mist (my favourites are by MAC and Makeup Forever). I say this because when you are going through an airport, there is a lot of waiting, in lines, in lounges, on the plane itself, with dirt, oil and sweat all collecting on your face. Ick. Add all the makeup you’re wearing and you have a perfect combination for a breakout to happen. When I landed in France, it was about 7 am there but 2 am in Canada. I didn’t sleep on the plane and was exhausted after going through security. My face had yet to be washed, still full of makeup, and by now it looked pretty greasy. After sleeping for a few (uncomfortable) hours, I woke up and knew I couldn’t leave my makeup on for another flight. I brought with me a bar of my dove soap and washed my face clean. Man that felt good. I moisturized after with my Shiseido cream and was ready for the next 10 hour leg of my journey.
My pores and face felt fresher, although not as clean as I would have liked but it was better then keeping my makeup on my face for 2 days. Here are some of my biggest takeaways when it comes to flying and skincare:
1. Don’t wear a face full of makeup when you have an overnight flight. Seems obvious but trust me, its really not worth it if you are just going to sleep on the plane. Wait until you’re at the airport at your destination if you absolutely need to put some on.
2. Moisturize with a cream and serum to lock in what moisture you can as it is very dry (and cold!!) on airplanes.
3. If you want to feel refreshed, use a toner or spray your face with a mist (I didn’t bring either with me and highly regretted it)
4. Stay hydrated before, on and after the plane ride
5. Avoid touching your face at all. On the plane you’re going to be touching everything which could be very very very germy. Don’t put those germs on your face!
6. Bring makeup remover and cotton pads and even a face towel if you can to avoid drying your face with bathroom paper towels (speaking from experience)
7. Makeup wipes would have been supremely helpful.
8. If you do have a long plane ride, throw on a sheet mask of sorts so you will be fresh and glowing when you get off the plane. I recently tried one from Sephora that had blueberry extract in it and it really helped wake up my dull looking skin. You might look weird on the plane..but hey #noregrets
